Our client
Our client is Mr. Fred van Leeuwen. Mr. van Leeuwen is a professor at the UVA. Prof. Dr. Fred van Leeuwen studied biomedical sciences at Leiden University from 1987-2002 and is now working at a cancer institute, the Antoni van leeuwenhoek hospital.
For some of the students in the group, this is not the first time they have come into contact with Prof. Fred van Leeuwen. In the third year of VWO two students already did a project for Prof. Fred van Leeuwen. The assignment was to explain CRISPR-Cas to a certain audience. This time the assignment is a lot more advanced. These students liked that project very much and fortunately the client was also satisfied with the final result. Two years later, these students thought it would be nice to do another assignment for the client regarding CRISPR-cas, but this time they wanted it to be a little more topical. This group and the principal thought it would be a good idea to put a topical spin on the assignment regarding the vaccination problem and the corona pandemic. |
Assignment
The client expects a design of a cheap and efficient way, by which corona testing can be done by using the method CRISPR-Cas. The team does not have to deliver a working prototype, but the team must be able to explain how this test could work. The corona test should consist of cheap and durable materials. Not too much plastic should be used. A leaflet should also be provided, with which the team explains to fellow students how cool CRISPR-Cas is, what you can do with it with DNA and RNA and how it works in the test. It is also desired for the principal to give a final presentation in the department.
If the team provides a nice model for the Corona test and we present it to the client's department, they can use our project to start their own professional research. If that works for them, we might actually get a better Corona test in the Netherlands.
